"Miss Carytown" - One Shopper's Promise to Stay Faithful to Her Neighborhood

I’d like to call myself "Miss Carytown."

Ever since my parents moved to the City of Richmond when I was a kid I have been in love with Carytown.  Driving down Cary Street one feels immediately transported to a different time, where you could spend the afternoon in one place, having lunch, browsing a book store, getting a manicure, buying a dress, bumping into friends and forgetting about the miles of pavement, stop lights and big box stores that exist elsewhere.  Sure, I’m biased, but if anyone else had the love affair with a neighborhood like I have had with Carytown they would be biased too.

        My memories in Carytown:

My first manicure, taking my first puppy to the vet (Cary Street Vet), getting dropped off by parents to hang out with friends and loiter (don’t be mad you did it too), learning to parallel park (sorry for everyone who was behind me in traffic), dates to the Byrd theater, shopping for prom dresses, celebrating birthdays, I could go on and on you get the point.  This is a great place.  Now that I'm an adult I am still a loyal supporter of Carytown.  My dogs are groomed at Dogma.  I have my hair cut at the Private Session. Half of my wardrobe came from fab'rik, American Apparel or Need.  Once a month I indulge myself at For the Love of Chocolate.  More frequently than I'd like to admit I treat myself to a pear cider at Can Can. I would be lost if these places went away.  Carytown feels like a family member.

I want future generations to have the same experience that I’ve had.

Recently while shopping at Ellwood’s I saw a display about the proposed changes to Carytown. I don’t know what lies ahead for but in an attempt to prove that we have everything we need right here – I am going to pledge to only shop in Carytown until Jan 1. This includes all groceries, apparel, Christmas presents, household items, pet items, and everything else! I will be blogging about my experiences and encouraging everyone to support the wonderful merchants of Carytown who make this neighborhood a great place to live!

  XOXO, "Miss Carytown"

Congratulations for being considered among the best in the city! We would like to thank you for your hard work and service to the Richmond bar scene. Rating Richmond Bartending Competition

What is the best way to judge a bartender?

Sure it’s very entertaining to watch your local favorites scramble to find ingredients to beat the clock and amuse us with gorilla suits and hot boys in drag, but what makes a “good” bartender truly worthy of winning a “bartending competition?”

Here are our criteria for a typical patron – if the bar has an average number of people:

  1. Speed of service: how quickly after entering the establishments are you addressed with a greeting, eye contact and served?
  2. If the bar is not slammed with people, how frequently are you checked on?
  3. How long is your glass empty before you are asked if you would like another?
  4. When ordering a drink the bartender has not heard of what is their reaction? Do they try to make it? Do they insult you? Do they offer you something similar?
  5. Creativity: How frequently do women say “uuuhhh make me something fruity”… How delicious is your “something fruity”?
  6. Small talk – It isn’t uncommon for people to come to a bar alone during happy hour. Are you pleasant to talk to? Are you friendly? Do you flirt? What is your style?
  7. Finally what bothers us the most: How much more attention do regulars get than strangers? You never know when a stranger might become a regular – don’t blow them off.

Over the next few weeks we will be evaluating the bartenders of Richmond. Both strangers and regulars are welcome to give input: RatingRVA@gmail.com!

Top three will receive prizes. HAPPY DRINKING!

Monday Night = Burger Night RVA

A burger and a beer.  What better way to end your (shitty) Monday?

Richmonders have long rushed to the local oasis that is Capital Ale House (CAH) to take advantage of their Monday “Dollar Burger Night” while guzzling down a pint of a European Lager they can’t pronounce.

I have recently found a better “Burger Night” at Delux Lounge on Main Street.  Please allow me to convince you:

  1. Although Delux burgers are $5 on Monday, Patrons wishing to purchase a “Dollar Burger” at CAH must also purchase a beverage other than water. (Your CAH tab is up to $3)
  2. Delux burgers are made to order – my preference is Medium to Medium Rare. At CAH all $1 burgers are cooked well done, which in my opinion tastes like a piece of charcoal with Ketchup on it.
  3. CAH charges you extra for cheese. (Your CAH tab is up to at least $3.25)
  4. Delux gives you a choice of a side item. Try the sweet potato fries yum! CAH will bring you a side of fries for $2. (Your CAH tab is up to $5.25)

CAH $5.25 > Delux $5  Basically you get a Burger and side at Delux for about the same as you pay at Capital Ale House.

I can’t hate on Capital Ale – before Bar Louie was around there was no better place to go to catch a cougar.  Not as many cougars at Delux but with man candy bartenders on Monday nights a stream of sexy twenty somethings show up after dark.  Tonight I’ll stick to the fan and get my burger at Delux.  You should too!!
